Hoorah ! We have successfully navigated another dreary English Winter and indeed “The Ides of March” (yesterday!), unlike poor old Julius Caesar. But before we pop the champagne corks ( of which more later ), fellow bon-viveurs, a word of warning from your Griffin Gazette astrologer: we purveyors of victuals may yet be stabbed in the back by Chancellor Brutus, sorry Osbourne , in today’s budget !
However most FOGs (Friends of the Griffin) will be happily glued to the Cheltenham Festival , rather than watching more fiscal fuck ups from the government; and where better to watch the remaining few days than in the comfort of our club bar, warmed by the wood-burner, and enjoying our festival lunch menu – main course and glass of serious vino/ pint of “foaming best” at £16.50.

Primavera Al Forno
We are replacing the pictured wood oven and installing a huge new wood oven on the terrace next month to complement the existing barbecue and ovens on the upper lawn. This will allow Matt and his pirate crew to produce whole menus cooked outside; think of the great outdoors cuisine of Sicily, Spain, Australia etc.
We will be smoking hams and fish overnight, producing paella mixta, and doing a different daily wood-roast pizza

After a brief hiatus in February and March (inexplicably, winemakers don’t seem too keen to visit the UK in these months ?) the GWC returns with all guns blazing, with a couple of cracking events to titillate the palate.

The Trapiche Dinner with Martin Navesi
“Forgive and forget, Major !” … Okay Basil wasn’t talking about the Argies, but perhaps here in the UK we have been slow off the mark to realise the fantastic quality and also range of wines produced in the Argentine – I’m not talking about supermarket malbec here !
Trapiche regularly sweep the boards in South American wine competitions and have the good fortune to find themselves in the most beautiful part of the Mendoza, where they operate a state of the art winery in a historic palazzo… not bad, eh ?
Your host on the night, Martin Navesi of Trapiche , will guide us through his portfolio of wines , accompanied by a four course “Gaucho” dinner from the wood oven. The full wine/food race card to follow shortly. This is the first time The Griffin Wine Club has had the honour of a top winemaker from Argentina and I urge all GWC members and friends to book into this one- it promises to be innovative , didactic and sybaritic !

Champagne Jacquart Dinner
The Griffin and Champagne Jacquart have quite a bit of previous ! As a Grande Marque Champagne Jacquart has been our preferred fizz for many years, and in fact this will be our second evening in their company at The Griffin Inn. Three years ago the GWC invaded Reims on its annual sortie and we returned as apostles of Jacquart, over and above some of their better known neighbours.
Safe in the knowledge that it is going to be a Mediterranean May we anticipate a soiree under the stars, quaffing champagne and scoffing haute cuisine to the small hours. As above, I will send out full details nearer the time , but no harm in booking early/putting date in the diary.

We are launching a whole new cocktail list comprising some classics and some new concoctions (possibly somewhat overdue !) accompanied by an extensive range of wild and whacky new spirits to coincide with the start of the Sussex Summer.
We are delighted to have the services of Alex Turner, London’s leading mixologist, who alongside Linton Neil , Enotria’s leading debauchee and self will be dispensing cocktails, new wines , and just about everything else. We will be providing canapés etc from wood-oven as “blotting paper”.
In residence for the night , cutting the crucial tunes outside (and later inside !) DJs The Colonel (Tim Reeves) and DJ Hooperman (no explanation needed ).
There’s nothing we love more than the first Summer thrash, and it would be great to see you all for a night of gratuitous fun. No ticket required but just let us know if your coming
Spring Dinner, Bed & Breakfast deal -£160 for two !
From Sunday to Thursday, take a table for two, either in the restaurant or bar, eat a 3 course dinner from our daily changing menu, select an unctious bottle of wine from our list of 100 odd bins, and repair to one of four posters. Wake up late and take a leisurely and legendary Fletching breakfast. All for £160 (not including the vino, obvs !) .
Book to stay for two nights over the long Easter weekend at £100 per night, breakfast included.
We have a few rooms still available on Thursday and Easter Friday, and Easter Sunday and Monday; there is no shortage of fun to be had around these parts over the holiday, not least the inimitable Plumpton races on Sunday and Monday. Stay the extra night and “feel the love !”
